Did you know that approximately 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year? It’s probably no surprise that being more financially sound is in the top three, and it’s probably less of a surprise that fewer than 10% of resolutioners actually reach their goals.

Being in the homebuilding business, we see a lot of people working toward attaining their dream, luxury home in Oklahoma and having it customized to their personality and lifestyle. We, at Richardson Homes, are no different in wanting more for less and over the years we’ve learned that one of the most opportunistic areas in which to save without compromising quality is in decorating. Since the holiday décor is coming down and many of you may have your eye on a fresh look for the new year, we thought we’d share some ideas with you on how to update your Richardson Homes with those financial goals still in tact.

  1. Pick one (or more, if you like) DIY projects to tackle this year, such as a fresh coat of paint on your kitchen cabinets or reupholster a sofa, chair, or other piece(s) of furniture. You can find easy instructions on You Tube.
  2. Check out the remnant tables at your nearest fabric stores and pick out something eye-catching to sew new draperies or pillow covers with.
  3. Wallpaper in the back of a bookshelf is a fun idea for an easy change in the look of a room. It doesn’t take long to do, and it creates a subtle pop when you walk in the room.
  4. One of the least expensive ways to update the look of your Richardson Home is to add greenery. Find a plant you like and consider potting it in an unusual vase from a neighborhood thrift store. Canning jars, vintage coffee tins, and pretty wine bottles also make unique foliage containers.
  5. Garage Sale season is coming up, and one person’s trash can be a beautiful treasure for your Richardson Home. You can easily find wooden tables, desks, shelves, and the like that families are clearing out. These items are perfect for staining or distressing into something “one of a kind” for your home.
  6. Repurposing items is hot right now. Glassless wooden frames hung around pretty dishes are a different look. If you have a collection of wine corks, they can easily be glued together and turned into trivets or a pretty office corkboard for your home office.
  7. Finally, if you’re more interested in just adding to a room or replacing items in it than investing time in projects, check out Craig’s List or EBay. You can find used items in great condition at a budget-friendly price that will look beautiful in your Richardson Home!
